This summer, I’m working on #7 and #10

As you may know, I’m involved with the All Pro Dads chapter at my daughter’s school. Not too long ago, All Pro Dads included in one of its newsletters a list of the 10 Ways to Know You are being a Good Father.

I’m happy to see that I’m doing OK in eight out of the ten items. The two I need to work on are:

7.  When your calendar is full of things to do with your children

10.  When you know their friends by first name

…your calendar is full of things to do with your children

Mrs. McCullough and I do a lot of things with Zoe, but they kinda happen organically. We don’t sit down at the beginning of the month and plan a list of activities for the kid…and I’m not sure we’re going to start now. However, with summer approaching it is a great time to maybe jot down a couple of pre-planned activities.

…you know their friends by first name

Come on; cut a midlife brother a break here! The 40+ plus memory ain’t what it used to be!

Between summer camp activities and a few birthday parties, I’ll have ample opportunity to work on improving my skills in this fathering competency.

Zoe’s friends know me by name. Does it count that I know most of the little playas in training by name, face and last known residence?

I’m lucky if I know my own friends by their first name on the first try these days. Last week, I looked a work associate named Tom (whose name I know full well) straight in the face and said “Hi John.”

    Getting old sucks, man.
